SANDCAST: INDIVIDUALLY POURED. UNIQUELY YOURS.

All of my cast pieces at Three Trine are individually sandcast by me in my studio. Each one begins with a freshly prepared sand mold and takes shape through molten metal, patience, and hand finishing.

How does that differ from lost wax casting? Lost wax uses a wax model encased in a heat-resistant investment. The wax is burned away, leaving space for the metal. It allows for intricate detail, one-of-a-kind work, and repeated designs, with multiple pieces often cast together.

For my sandcast pieces, I pack sand around a model, then remove it to leave an impression. I pour molten metal into that cavity, and after removing the casting, I rebuild the mold for the next pour.

A successful casting can take me one to four attempts. Even a carefully prepared mold may not fill completely before the metal cools. When that happens, I rebuild, remelt, and pour again.

That individuality is what draws me to the process. Even within the same design, each pour and the finishing that follows create subtle differences in texture and character.

I love bold forms with a substantial feel. The weight comes from my design choices and the amount of metal, while the quality comes from care at every stage. Both casting methods can produce beautiful jewelry; sandcasting gives me the hands-on connection I want with my work.

Every successful pour is then cleaned, filed, refined, and finished by hand. From the first impression in sand to the final polish, I’m the maker behind every step.
